In 1832, Scottish emigrant James Hogg settled in the West Don River valley near what is now the intersection of Yonge Street and York Mills Road.  He built a whisky distillery, a grist mill and a hotel to serve the nearby village of York Mills.  After his death, his sons John and William subdivided the property and named the district “Hogg’s Hollow.”

Hogg’s Hollow's slow development from the 1920’s to the 1960’s has left it with an eclectic mix of housing styles.  A typical Hogg's Hollow house is set on a lot that measures 50' or more in width, with a length that can reach over 200'.  It is a magical neighbourhood of detached single family homes set among winding streets and mature trees. Its “otherworldly” feel is increased by the frequent mists from the Don River. However, this beauty places Hogg's Hollow properties in the ranks of luxury real estate, and they are priced accordingly.  2015 sale prices for river valley houses ranged from $1 million to 6.5 million dollars, with an average price of $3.5 million.  Local condominium prices spanned $350,000 to nearly $2.5 million, with most properties changing hands for about $900,000.

Hogg’s Hollow has come a long way since the once mighty Don River powered James Hogg’s grist mill. The metamorphosis from an industrial hub into one of the City’s most sought after residential areas is complete.
